Kayak Window

Made for kayak anglers

Is it on?

Kayak Window checks the wind, gusts, swell, tide and water at your launch and your fishing spot, and gives you a straight answer: GO or NO GO. Against your limits, not someone else's. And it tells you when a window opens, at the time you choose.

Free while in testing. Android first.

Kayak Window forecast screen showing GO today from 12:00 to 19:00, wind from the SW at 18 km/h, swell 2.1 m, high tide 12:44 and water 16.5 degrees

Most days are a no. The app finds the yes.

Every morning it checks the next 16 days for each of your spots. Red means something is outside your limits. Yellow is close. Green is a window worth loading the kayak for.

A real outlook from Coral Beach, Langebaan. Faded days are 8 or more days out and still likely to change.

Know it's on before you load the kayak.

Wind bars for today with the fishing window underlined, the tide curve with the launch time and fish activity marked, and the next 7 days

A verdict you can read in the car park

One big ring: GO or NO GO, the best window and the hours it runs, with the plain reason. Scroll down and the wind and tide are drawn out, with your launch time and the best fish activity marked on the tide curve.

  • Wind, gusts, swell and period, tide, pressure, rain chance, fog and water temperature, all checked against your limits.
  • Sea temperature from satellite, plus a sea surface forecast about 10 days ahead. Cold upwelling water often means fewer bites.
  • Offshore wind is flagged. The one that blows you away from the beach gets its own warning.
  • Paddle-back warning. If the wind will be against you on the way home, or picks up after your window, it says so and tells you when to be back.
Hour-by-hour grid with wind, gusts, wind direction letters, swell, period, water temperature, rain, fog and pressure, coloured green, yellow or red

Hour by hour, coloured in

Tap a day and every hour lays out in a grid. Green is inside your limits, yellow is close, red is out. You see straight away whether it's the gusts or the swell that kills the afternoon.

Every wind arrow carries its direction in letters, like SW, WNW or SSE, so there's no guessing which way it points.

The orange bar is your fishing window. The models row shows how far apart the forecasts are, so you know how much to trust it.

Weather models chart: wind from ECMWF, GFS, ICON and UKMO for the day, with your wind limit as a dashed orange line

Four forecasts. The safe one wins.

Kayak Window pulls the wind from four weather models: ECMWF (Europe), GFS (USA), ICON (Germany) and UKMO (UK). Under each day, a chart draws all four next to your limit. Lines close together: the forecast is solid. Spread out: it could go either way.

By default GO or NO GO uses the strongest model each hour, so a calm-looking forecast never talks you into a windy afternoon. Prefer the average? Change it in Settings.

Spot screen with an on-the-water report, sunrise, tides, moon and a wind chart with direction letters and the dashed orange max-wind line

Sixteen days, one spot, one glance

Each spot gets its own page: sunrise and sunset, high and low tides from the nearest tide station, moon phase and a wind chart for every day, with the direction under each arrow.

Fish activity sits on the tide chart as little fish: the big ones mark the best feeding times from the moon, the small ones the next best.

The dashed orange line is your max wind. When the line of wind stays under it, you're fishing. See how to read it.

Spot editor map with the launch pin and a fishing spot 3.5 km out on Langebaan Lagoon

Your launch and your mark, both

Drop a pin where you launch and another where you actually fish. The forecast follows you out to the mark, and the app tells you how far the paddle is.

Got the marks on your fishfinder? Type the GPS straight in: decimal, degrees and minutes, or degrees, minutes and seconds.

Pick beginner, intermediate or advanced to start, then tune every limit: wind, gusts, wind direction, swell, period, and even pressure and water temperature. Share a spot with a mate, or import one they sent you.

Catch log with a 60 cm silver kob, the wind, swell, water temperature, tide and moon filled in

A catch log that remembers the sea

Log a fish and the wind, swell, water temperature, tide and moon are filled in for you. 150+ salt and freshwater species, with their local names.

After a few fish it shows which tide, moon and wind your fish actually come on. Share a catch to WhatsApp and the GPS is stripped out, so your mark stays yours.

Alerts that land on time

At the time you pick. The daily check runs at the exact time you set, even 20:00 the night before, so you can plan the morning.

One clear message. "Langebaan: GO tomorrow 06:00 to 10:00." Your daily outlook, plus an alert when a new window opens, firms up or is cancelled. Want it loud? Let it ring like an alarm.

Summer and winter hours. Set your fishing hours once for summer and once for winter. The home-screen widget shows your next window without opening the app.

Someone on shore knows the plan.

Set a back-by time before you go. Kayak Window writes the message for you, with your launch, your fishing spot and your time, ready to send on WhatsApp or SMS. You get a reminder 30 minutes before, at your back-by time and 30 minutes after. If you haven't checked in, your contact knows where to look.

On the water now report: place Langebaan, light wind, small swell, clean water, fish on

On the water now

At the launch? Tap Report and pick a few chips: wind, swell, water colour, fish on or not. The place name fills itself in.

Your report sits in the Community Now tab and on the spot page for anglers nearby, for 12 hours, then disappears. They see what it's really like before they drive.

Only the area around your launch is shown, rounded to about 1 km. Never your fishing mark or your spot's name.

Comp page: Testers Comp, winner by community vote, voting closes 23 November, code word BAIT 97, how it works and entries

Comps with your own rules

Anyone can run a comp. Pick how it's won: biggest fish, most fish, or let the community vote for the best fish and the story behind it. Write "how it works" in your own words.

A daily code word goes in the photo, so nobody enters an old fish. Add a length rule, camera-only photos, or check entries before they show.

When voting opens, everyone gets an alert. One vote each, and counts stay hidden until voting closes.

Fish with a crew

Catches nearby. See what's coming out of the water within the distance you choose.

Trips with friends. Post a trip and invite friends from your list. They answer "I'm in" or "can't make it", so nobody paddles out alone.

Clubs. Start or join a club, run club trips and club comps from the app.

Friends. Share your friend code. Friends see the catches you post as "friends only".

Profiles. A photo, your launches, fish caught and clubs, for your friends to see.

Adults only, and safe. Community is 18+. Report or block anyone, and phone and GPS details are stripped from photos.
